Impact Overview Statement

(1) Context- Context for the individual case study 

Food contamination and waste disposal are two major global environmental issues. Most of the food waste (3600 tonnes/day) generated in Hong Kong is disposed of in our overloaded landfills. This is undoubtedly not a sustainable management option for food waste. In this impact case study, our team has successfully developed fish feed pellets using food waste to grow freshwater and marine fish. 

Compared with the commercial feeds, the food waste-based feeds could save up to 28.5% (2017), 24.5% (2017), and 28.6% (2019) of the total production cost for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), jade perch (Scortum barcoo), and Sabah giant grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus x Epinephelus lanceolatus), respectively. Moreover, the fish products are safe for human consumption with acceptable levels of environmental contaminants such as mercury (Hg) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). There is great potential for using food waste-based feed as an alternative to commercial feeds for cultivating both freshwater and marine fish. 

 

(2) Approaches to Impact- the unit’s approach to impact during the assessment period for impact 

- Recycle local food waste to produce food waste-based feeds for local sustainable aquaculture 

- Disseminate the findings through publications, workshops, and symposiums; parties from academics, industries (fish manufacturers, fish farmers, restaurant owners), and the general public. They will gain knowledge about the transformation of bioresources into aquacultural products. 

In addition, the impact case research data will be transformed into teaching materials (for primiary and secondary school students) to learn the concepts of resource reuse and sustainable aquaculture. 

This impact case successfully demonstrated the feasibility of recycling food waste for growing freshwater and marine fish which aligns with the goal and new visions of of the government: Waste Reduction, Resources Circulation, and Zero Landfill. 

Strategy and plans – strategy and plans for supporting impact 

We are closely working with the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD) to promote food waste-based feeds (FWBFs) With their support, the products have been introduced to fish feed mansufacturers and local fish farmers for growing fish.
