Self-Introduction

Dr. Hoi-huen CHAN is a highly accomplished scholar and educator with a strong background in Biochemistry, Physiology and Education. After obtaining Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Master of Philosophy in Physiology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, she received Doctor of Philosophy in Biology as well as Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the Hong Kong Baptist University.

Prior to joining EdUHK, she served as a Lecturer at tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. Apart from teaching courses in Biology and Health Sciences, she was assigned as an Assistant Programme Leader of Health Studies. With her working experience in the tertiary education sector, she is able to provide valuable guidance and external support to students about further education or employment opportunities.

Her research interests include but not limited to Biology and STEM Education. Among her published research papers in international journals and conference proceedings, the latest publications are inFrontiers in Pharmacologyand alsoEvidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.With her high degree of professionalism and commitment to research,she is capable to receive grants fromTheGovernmentof theHong KongSpecial Administrative Regionto support her work in the development of AI labs and STEM maker projects.

Dr Chan’s research integrates astrophysics, cosmology, and dark matter studies with philosophy of science and religion. His projects examine multiverse hypotheses, fine-tuning, and theistic arguments, while exploring mass distribution near black holes. He also promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and STEM education, bridging natural sciences with philosophical and theological perspectives.

Dr Cheng’s research centers on environmental health by elucidating the pivotal roles of microbial communities, including biofilms, in mediating the environmental fate, bioavailability, and toxicity of contaminants. She develops and integrates advanced non-destructive monitoring technologies—including environmental DNA genomics, bioinformatics, and remote sensing-based habitat and biodiversity assessments—to unravel the mechanistic links among habitat dynamics, ecosystem processes, and community biodiversity and interactions. Dr. Cheng has established high-throughput pipelines and database tools for screening harmful biota and monitoring ecosystem dynamics. Her work addresses the impacts of anthropogenic stressors and climate change on habitat structure, community composition, and species interactions, with the goal of safeguarding the environment and promoting public health through sustainable environmental management and technological innovations.

Dr Ching’s research focuses on atmospheric science, particularly aerosol-cloud-climate interactions and air quality modeling. His projects examine black carbon aerosol mixing state, aerosol microphysics, and their impacts on climate and public health. He also explores sustainable solutions to air pollution, integrating advanced particle-resolved models and regional atmospheric models for environmental and societal challenges.

Professor Chow’s research focuses on the intersection of chemical science and environmental sustainability. His work involves the development of high-performance chemosensors and catalysts designed for real-time pollutant detection, food quality monitoring, clinical diagnostics, and industrial wastewater remediation. Through the integration of functional materials and electronic transduction methods, his work provides scalable, sustainable frameworks for environmental stewardship and public health.

Prof. Ho’s scientific research spans environmental chemistry, sustainable materials, and pollution control. His projects focus on photocatalysis, waste-to-resource innovation, and advanced nanomaterials for air and water remediation. Integrating interdisciplinary expertise, he advances green technologies that address pressing ecological challenges while promoting sustainable urban development and environmental resilience.

Sarah obtained her doctoral degree in Science Education and was a biology teacher in secondary schools for 10 years.

Dr Li’s research focuses on environmental microbiome, including who are there and how they interact. She employs a combination of experimental and bioinformatic approaches to address questions related to microbial ecology. She pursues microbiology research in the context of human health and a sustainable environment, tackling grand challenges such as antibiotic resistance and climate change.

My research covers organic chemistry, chemistry education, and STEAM education. I teach chemistry, STEAM, and science education. Combining innovative research with interdisciplinary instruction, I aim to inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in future science educators.

Dr Li’s research focuses on soil and water pollution, environmental microbiology, and phytoremediation. His projects investigate heavy metal accumulation in crops, microplastic biofilm-mediated pathogen transfer, and microbial-enhanced remediation strategies. He also conducts ecological risk assessments and promotes sustainable solutions to safeguard ecosystems and public health through innovative environmental management.

Dr Man's research focuses on health risk assessments with an emphasis on food safety, the biogeochemical cycling of persistent toxic substances, wastewater treatment, wetland biodiversity, and bioresource management in aquaculture. His current projects include a study funded by the Research Grants Council's General Research Fund, which investigates the use of activated carbon made from rice husks and coconut shells as a feed supplement to reduce the uptake of harmful substances, such as metalloids, PAHs, and PCBs, by Nile tilapia. Additionally, he is one of the Co-PIs of the Research Impact Fund (RIF) project "EarthBioGenomeProject Hong Kong: Butterflies and Next Generation of Scientists," which explores butterfly biodiversity while inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Dr. Steve Mung’s major research interests include microwave and millimeter-wave circuit and systems, non-invasive sensing, and smart sensing networks. Through the integration of electromagnetic sensing, circuit design, and wireless communication methods, his work provides practical and deployable solutions for real-world sensing and communication systems

Prof. Tsang specializes in environmental science, focusing on pollution studies, environmental impact assessment, and sustainability education. His research spans environmental education program evaluation, green school initiatives, and STEAM education. He actively promotes cross-border collaboration and leads projects on climate change, conservation, and progressive learning for sustainable futures.

Dr Tsang’s research interests include wastewater and sludge treatment, microplastics and nanoplastics, resource recovery, bioremediation, microbial CO2 fixation, and odour pollution control. He received his BEng and PhD in Environmental Engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Prior to joining EdUHK, he was a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a Research Fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at PolyU. Currently, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Energy & Environment, Editor of Chemical Engineering Journal, and Subject Editor of Process Safety and Environmental Protection.

Dr Wang's research focuses on the environmental fate and risk assessment of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). His work includes 1. trace-level target analysis of CECs, with a particular emphasis on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and their alternatives, in the environment and biota, 2. non-target screening of CEC degradation products and metabolites using high-resolution mass spectrometry combined with computational approaches, and 3. toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic studies to explore the bioavailability, toxicity, and ecological risks of CECs.

Prof. Yung’s research focuses on neuroscience, neurodegenerative diseases, and therapeutic innovations on incurable diseases . His projects include studying TWIK2 channels for Parkinson’s disease treatment. He also explores AI-driven ion channel analysis and novel biomaterials for cancer immunotherapy, and integrating neuroscience with advanced biomedical and computational approaches in animal and human subjects.  One application is exploring roles of smart calligraphy in cognitive development.
