Programme Information

Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Primary) - General Studies (Humanities and Science) promotes your generic skills for life-wide and life-long learning, fosters positive personal and social values and attitudes, and develops your skills through investigation, project learning and service learning. Taught as an interdisciplinary subject, this programme aims to develop generic skills (e.g. problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, study skills, communication, Information Technology, etc.) that are essential for learning in the information era and for making sense of social and environmental issues. You will be acquainted with the spirit and framework of inquiry and will be equipped with the social and scientific inquiry skills that come into play in the teaching and learning of Primary Humanities and Primary Science.

Programme Aims

This programme aims to prepare our students to become outstanding primary school teachers who:

have positive professional attitude;
have sound academic knowledge and broad-based professional knowledge and skills;
have lifelong learning skills and are able to appreciate moral, social and cultural values;
can work collaboratively with students, parents, colleagues, school administrators and other professionals; and
understand education issues of Hong Kong and react positively to educational innovations.

On completion of the programme, General Studies (Humanities and Science) students are expected to be able to:

demonstrate a solid understanding and command of the core concepts and methods of enquiry in social sciences, science and technology;
show a broad understanding of the diverse social and cultural contexts in the local, national and global communities;
demonstrate a thorough understanding of interdisciplinary concepts and approaches in curriculum integration and display competence in interdisciplinary studies and thinking;
apply critical and creative thinking and problem solving abilities to deal with social, science, environmental and health-related issues;
display positive attitude towards the acceptance of diversity and multiplicity; and
demonstrate the pedagogical literacy and competency required for the development and implementation of curriculum.

A wide range of programmes and services are offered to enhance your personal growth and career development. Counsellors are there to help you resolve personal, interpersonal, emotional, academic and family problems. Assessment tests and workshops are conducted to strengthen your self-understanding, psychological wellness, interpersonal relationship and learning style. Career education and job search skills training programmes are also organised to help you understand your career interests, map out your career plan, as well as increase your employability. On the jobsite “Ed Job Plus”, you can easily access job vacancy information as well as apply to jobs online.

Health Service

Located on the first floor of the Administration Building, the Health Centre provides medical and dental services for all students. It also organises health education programmes in the form of seminars, talks, games and exhibitions on a regular basis.

Field Experience

Field Experience

1	Year 2 Semesters 1 & 2	Attend an introduction (FE Foundation Course with 3 cps) to the teaching profession. Students will be guided and supported by a Professional FE Tutor to understand the roles and expectations of a teacher and build their own professional identity and mission, whilst adapting to the changing role from a student to a professional teacher.
2	Year 3 Semester 2	Conduct Block Practice I in schools (5 cps) for 8 weeks, accompanied by the taught course of FE and Professional Learning Portfolio I (2 cps) in small-group tutorials that support students’ active engagement in the Field Experience, and help them connect theory and practice. Through group and individual guidance, students will produce an e-portfolio which is a collection of evidence of their learning, to support reflection and professional growth.
3	Year 5 Semester 1	Conduct Block Practice II in schools (7 cps) for 8 weeks, accompanied by the taught course of FE and Professional Learning Portfolio II (3 cps) in small-group tutorials and individual guidance that enhance students’ understanding of the schools and the role of a teacher as a caring cultivator, an inspirational co-constructor and a committed role model for students. They will further develop their e-portfolio for more in-depth reflection and records of their professional development

Block Practice will be conducted in local schools where the medium of instruction may vary depending on the policy of the schools. Students should be able to demonstrate a proficient level of Cantonese / English / Putonghua (for Chinese Language teaching in some schools) to conduct Block Practice.

Important Note: The University will ask students of our full-time teacher education programmes (e.g. Bachelor of Education programmes) to declare whether they have been convicted of or are being prosecuted for any sex-related offence in Hong Kong or elsewhere, and to provide relevant details prior to undertaking teaching practice. Such information may be released to their placement schools. The University reserves the right not to allow these students to attend the block teaching practice. If so, they won't be able to meet the graduation requirements of the programmes.
